Punk benefit in Nottingham

Belgian dub punk band Cop on Fire will be playing a benefit gig in support of antifascist prisoners at the Sumac Centre in Nottingham next Thursday, August 25th.

COP ON FIRE

“Born out of Leuven, Belgium’s activist squatting scene in 2004, Cop on Fire have been putting up festive foundations of pumping drums and sub-bass dub supporting their local scene. COF consists of 4 people who have a heart for dub, ska, punk and protest songs – they use these influences to recreate feelings from daily life: sticking it to The Man, taking a stand for Mother Earth, opening the bin for bigoted morality and xenophobia of all kinds… oh, and we don’t like cops. Reclaim the Streets, opening autonomous social centres, Antifascist Action, sustainable living… action backed up by the flow of drum and bass, a guitar crossing musical boundaries all thrown in a mix of effects and echoes from the underbelly of society – the samples. Influenced by bands as diverse as Amebix, Skatalites, Killing Joke, Mad Professor, Conflict, Radical Dance Faction, The Clash and Immortal Technique”

Food served from 7pm, gig starting at 8ish, £5 entry.

Punx Picnic benefit cancelled

Unfortunately the Sunday gig at the North London Punx Picnic, which was to have been a benefit for the antifascist prisoners, has been cancelled. The gig was due to take place this coming Sunday (14th August) in Tottenham, but the promoters felt that the current unrest could have been a threat to the venue. For a full statement from the organising collective see here.

All is not lost though. There is a punk benefit CD – Prisoner of War – proceeds of which are to be shared with the antifascist prisoners. You can pick up one here. You can pay what you want, but the more you pay the more money goes to the prisoners.

Austen Jackson and Thomas Blak get prison sentences

Two more of the imprisoned antifascists were officially sentenced to jail this week. Thomas Blak and Austen Jackson have been held on remand since their dodgy conviction in June, and appeared in Blackfriars court on Monday August 8th for sentencing.

The judge in the case continued his approach of handing down lengthy prison sentences, sending down Thomas for 18 months and Austen for 15 months. This follows the 21 month sentences he already handed down to four antifascists. One further antifascist involved in this case is still on bail awaiting sentence.

If you have not yet written to the prisoners now might be a good time to send a letter or a card. Many of the prisoners are being moved around at the moment. Though Austen and Thomas remain in Wormwood Scrubs for now there is a good chance they will be moved very soon. Check the address page of this blog for correct contact details.

Phil De Sousa moved

Another of the antifascist prisoners has now been transferred away from Wormwood Scrubs. As of Friday August 5th Phil De Sousa is now being held at HMP Elmley on the Isle of Sheppey.

Any letters to Phil should now be sent to the address below.

About

On 28th March 2009 a number of people travelled to south-east London to protest against a Blood and Honour gig at the Duchess of Edinburgh Pub. On their way back there was an altercation between some of the protesters and fascists on the platform of Welling train station.

Police arrested every antifascist protester they could lay their hands on: 23 people in total, 22 of whom were charged with conspiracy to commit Violent Disorder. This was too many to fit into one court room so the case split in two, with the first 11 people going on trial on 6th June. None of the fascists were arrested or charged.

On Tuesday 28th June, after 17 days on trial, seven antifascists were convicted. Four were sentenced immediately to 21 months, three are awaiting reports (two on remand and one on bail) and will be sentenced in August. Four people have been acquitted and we wish them all the best in suing the police, which they would be fully justified in doing, not only for having the worry of a court case hanging over them for over two years but also in one case being unable to work as a nurse because of comments by police on his criminal record check.

Because legal proceedings are ongoing we do cannot go into any further detail at this time. Please respect this and do not press for more information on this sensitive matter, or engage in online speculation.

Prisoner details

Please note that the details below are now out of date. See the the address page for current addresses, guidelines on what can be sent, etc.

As you have been made aware, six of our friends were recently imprisoned for antifascist activities. Due to the nature of the case we cannot yet go into specific details about the incident at this time, but a full report will follow.

The prison addresses of our comrades are below; please write and send them your support. You can send stamps and stationary (though not pens). It is recommended that you send any money through this site, though if you wish to send it directly to the prisoner you can do so by postal order. See the Prisoner addresses page of this blog for further details of how to do this.

Please remember when writing that all letters will be read by the screws, so don’t say anything that could incriminate yourself or someone else. Two prisoners are as yet un-sentenced so please bear this in mind too. For more advice about writing to prisoners check ABC Brighton.
